Naval: Abel P. Upshur American statesman (1790-1844); US Secretary of State and Secretary of the Navy under Tyler; killed when a gun exploded on the USS Princeton during its ceremonial first cruise. Scarce LS "A.P. Upshur" as Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 4to, Navy Department [Washington], 4/15/1843. He writes Brig. Gen. A. Henderson at the Navy Yard Headquarters, authorizing him to allow "the same compensation to the first clerk in the office of the Adjutant and Inspector of the Marine Corps as is allowed to the second clerk in the office of the Quartermaster..." Light fold wear, nicks in right edge, otherwise in very good condition. Upshur was a force for reform while he headed the Navy; after the resignation of Daniel Webster, President John Tyler chose Upshur to replace him in the State Department. Estimate US$ 200-300
