American Revolution: Oliver Ellsworth Third Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1745-1807, served 1796-1801); delegate to Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention. DS "O. Ellsworth," 1p, oblong 8vo, Hartford, CT, 11/16/1776. Pay order to treasurer John Lawrence [who appears to have written the document] in behalf of Mr. Jabez West, in the amount of "Seventy pounds, thirteen Shillings & sixpence for Hospital Stores by him supplied the Connecticut Troops in Service last Year near Boston..." Also signed by "T. Seymour" and "Jn: Lawrence Esq." On verso is document signed by "Jb. West," acknowledging receipt of payment. VG. With interesting audit docket. The action alluded to was undoubtedly the local militia´s response to the movement of British troops back to Boston from Lexington and Concord in April 1775. The British had gone to Lexington to arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock, but militia had been warned and the march turned into a fiasco. Connecticut troops had been roused to assist, but turned back when they learned the action had ended on April 22. Estimate US$ 200-300
