Newspapers: Nast Important issue of "Harper´s Weekly / A Journal of Civilization," vol. VIII, no. 401, 9/3/1864. Front page has a fine engraving of "General Sherman´s Campaign - Council of War Held at General Wood´s Headquarters," showing Sherman, Thomas, Howard, Logan, and others meeting at a small house. With more on the Atlanta campaign, which had ended just the day before with the city´s capture, a wonderful centerfold of Farragut´s fleet at the entrance of Mobile Bay, and the famous, full-page engraving of Thomas Nast´s "Compromise With The South" cartoon, "Dedicated to the Chicago [Democratic] Convention," where there was much talk of abandoning the war. It shows a ruined North shaking hands with Jeff Davis, who has broken the sword of "Northern Power" underfoot while a black man in uniform and his family are returned to slavery. Apparently removed from a bound collection. Age-toned, with some light soiling, wear at left edge, VG. Estimate US$ 50-75
