Queen Anne's reign coincided with a pivotal period of imperial consolidation and conflict for the American colonies. In 1707, the Act of Union meant that the colonies formerly known as English became British. This allowed Scottish merchants and settlers fuller access to colonial trade and emigration.


Her reign was dominated by Queen Anne's War (1702-1713), also known as the Third Indian War and the Second Intercolonial War, fought between Britain and her allies against French and Spanish forces. The war was fought along the frontiers of New England, New York, and the Carolinas, and included notable conflicts such as the raids on Deerfield, Massachusetts, and the capture of Port Royal in Acadia.


The war concluded with the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, through which Britain gained Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and the Hudson Bay territory from France, significantly expanding British North American holdings.

Anne also lent her name to numerous colonial institutions and places, including Queen Anne's County in Maryland, reflecting her prominence during a period when the American colonies grew more entwined with imperial military and economic ambitions.
