The Nicholas Rhodes Collection of Nepalese Coins and Medals: Part Two

Rhodes et al. (1987) remarked that the Mohars RGV 281 and RGV 282 are the earliest Malla coins which feature eight petals containing the astamangala emblems near the rim of the coin. Coins with this device were very popular in Tibet because of the Buddhist symbolism and also because the eight petals could be used as a guideline when cutting the coins into fractions in order to obtain small change. However, so far, fractions of Mohars of Bhupalendra have not been found in Tibet.

According to Rhodes et al. (1987) the reverse legend of the fourth coin can be translated as “King of Poets, Jewel in the Crown of the Empire”
