Nepal, Kathmandu, Jaya Bhupalendra Malla (1687-1700), Mohar, NS 809, Obv. trident and legend in five lines, Śrī 2/Jaya/Bhūpā/lendra/ Malla in central octagon, one syllable each of the legend: Nepāleśvara Rājendra in the eight petals attached to the octagon, Rev. sword with garland and legend in four lines, Laksmī/Nara/yana/809, in central octagon, auspicious emblems (astamangala) in the eight petals attached to the octagon, 5.50g, 1h (RGV 281; KM 207), extremely fine and scarce

The Nicholas Rhodes Collection of Nepalese Coins and Medals: Part Two

Rhodes et al. (1987) remark that the mohars RGV 281 and RGV 282 are the earliest Malla coins which feature eight petals containing the astamangala emblems near the rim of the coin. Coins with this device were very popular in Tibet because of the Buddhist symbolism and also because the eight petals could be used as a guideline when cutting the coins into fractions in order to obtain small change. However, so far fractions of mohars of Bhupalendra have not been found in Tibet.
