1811 (August 28) Entire letter between two lawyers written from Mr Ware at Gray's Inn, London to Mr John Mitchell, Wymondham, with a datestamp on the reverse, relating to a covenant on property, the "Gringley Estate purchased by the Duke of Devonshire and exchanged with the Duke of Portland", mentioning the famous poet. "Lord Byron will of course be at the Expense of the extract", with further reference to "the indemnity from Lord Byron ag't Lady Caroline Byron's position. I understand that Lord Byron and Mr Hanson are both in want of money and the latter...is under large engagements on account of Lord Byron, and most anxiously wishes to have the business completed." This, a copy letter from Ben Follett at Temple, is part of the entire and is headed "Lord Byron's Estates.
Byron had returned from Malta and his Grand Tour in July 1811, never far from financial problems. A fascinating insight into the state of his affairs.
