Edward III (1327-1377), Third Period, Noble, authorised 30 July 1346 - May 1351, Tower (London), ED | WAR' : D' x GRA : REX : AnGL : S : FRAnC : DnS:hyB, "belt-buckle E", small lettering, double saltire stops, King standing in ship, brandishing long sword and Royal shield set with semé of four fleurs in first quarter, ropes 3/2 with dexter line bisecting legend, quatrefoils 4/4, bow-sprit behind foc'sul, ornaments 11-11-11, leopards facing left, rev. :+: Ih'C : TRANSIEns : PER : MEDIVM : ILLORVM : IBAT, chevron-barred As, lombardic Ns and Ms, large lettering, double saltire stops, large E inverted at centre of transitional floriate cross with detached "snail-like" calyces, recut fleur-de-lys and didelphic filaments without anthers, [Spink XRF: .999 Fine], 34.5 x 34.1mm., 8.223g [126.90grns], [6h to i.m.], 2h, i.m. broken cross formée (BM 2019 T450, no. 2 = PAS OXON-1AAA88, no. 619 this coin; Potter Type 1b, no. 3/- same obverse die; Stewartby 1/2; Edmund, dies Aa-5/bb-1; North 1110; Spink 1481), unfortunate excavation scuffs to tops of devices in first quarter of reverse and subtle crimping to an otherwise neat, round planchet of official weight; beautifully fresh and original for strike with much playful lustre, a most exquisitely bold extremely fine but truly "as issued", of the highest rarity thus, the reverse die previously unpublished
