Maltese Cross Applied in Error
1840-1901, a range of markings (19) including 1842 (3 Mar.) wrapper to London "Pre Paid" with manuscript "1" in red ink, top right corner with black Maltese Cross applied in error and overstruck by Portsmouth open-top c.d.s. with a second despatch c.d.s. at left and London Paid tombstone arrival; 1849 (27 Oct.) wrapper to Darlington originally bearing 1841 1d. tied by "575" of Norwich, the adhesive fell off (leaving a gum mark) and the space marked with straight-line "Prepaid" and Norwich c.d.s. in blue to denote payment had been made and a red crayon "1" has been crossed through. The original stamp has been saved and is included; 1852 (Dec.) stampless letters from Bath to U.S.A. with (22.12) entire to Ohio "Via Boston" and (21.12) envelope to New York, both bearing unframed "sent back to england/without a reason/for non-delivery" with appropriate transit and rate marks vis Liverpool; "missent/to liverpool" (1840); "To be delivered/by hand" (1844); "redirected/postage unpaid" in red (1861); "paid/6d./extra" (1848); "Of the nature of a letter" (1877); "contrary to regulations" (1874); Inspector's mark (1858); "E/GW" Great Western handstamp (1857); boxed "L2" in red (1869); "posted out/of course" (1901). boxed Late Fee 2d. (1896) and different type of Too Late. Generally good to fine and a great selection of markings
