Free Trade and Corn Law Repeal
1844 (22 Sept.) envelope to London bearing 1841 1d. red-brown, GC (good to large margins all round) tied by black Maltese Cross, the reverse with Liverpool despatch and London arrival c.d.s.; good to fine. The design with illustrated border in gold with "Free Trade" slogan at top and bottom, designed by John Gadsby. This propaganda design was produced to advocate the repeal of the 1842 Corn Law Act which imposed duties on the importation of corn. Photo
