Great Britain
1840 Mulready
One Penny Envelope
A139, 1840 (13 June) to Plymouth cancelled by a blackish strike of red Maltese Cross, the reverse with a faint strike of "Kensington/Penny Post" in the same colour ink and Kingston despatch c.d.s.; there are two vertical creases and some light toning; the wax seal has been torn off the reverse with some loss of the stereo number. With R.P.S. Certificate (2022) which states, "with oxidised red Maltese Cross" but this seems a little unlikely as the colour on the reverse is very similar. This is not the brown cancellation; also A145 1840 (10 Oct.) forme 2 from Penrith to Ludlow cancelled by Maltese Crosses in blue and orange-red shades, the reverse with blue Penrith despatch. Brandon and Briefmarkenprufsteller Certificates (2006), though some doubts have been raised and therefore the cover is offered 'as is'. An interesting duo.
