Auction: 26015 - "The Treasure of the Eagles" Collection of Albania - Part I
Lot: 3028

(x) Austrian Levant (1820-1914)
Antivari
1862 (July 5). Registered envelope (upper back flap missing) from Shkodër (Scutari) to Constantinople via Bar (Antivari), where the “recom.” (indicating payment of the registration fee), “franco” and "antivari" second-type c.d.s. were all applied in transit, backstamped with Austrian arrival c.d.s. Cover edge imperfections at lower left. To our knowledge, an exceedingly scarce combination of these postmarks, being unique applied in blue.

provenance: Fiorenzo Zanetti
note: The letters from Albanian territory addressed to the Ottoman Empire could reach their final destinations by two routes: either by sea, via Austrian Lloyd steamers calling at the Albanian ports (mainly for correspondence to Constantinople), as in this instance; or by land through Ottoman postal couriers, the so-called Tatars, following the Rumelian route. The choice of route depended primarily on the time required for transport, as the applicable tariffs were generally similar.
