1856 (Jan. 14). Cover from the religious mission of Sappa, in the vilayet of Scutari, to the Council for the Propagation of the Catholic Faith in Lyon, France, posted at Antivari (Bar) with early use of Type 2 (Tchilinghirian & Stephen, fig. 467) “antivari” c.d.s. of the Austrian Lloyd maritime postal agency opened there in 1854. Red Sardinian “Via degli Stati Sardi” h.s. attesting direct transport by French vessel, red French entry c.d.s., and “10” due on arrival; backstamped in Triest and Lyon. Handwritten rate of “10” soldi on back -instead of the usual triple rate normally due for maritime transport by Austrian Lloyd steamers-, inland carriage through the Lombardy-Venetian Kingdom, and onward land transport along the French route to destination. One of just three letters known with the seal of the Diocese of Sappa.
