1804. Disinfected envelope from Venice to Naples via Chioggia, Fano, and Rome, bearing two different “Venezia” postmarks on departure and charged with 12 kreuzer, additionally showing a framed “il magistrato/di sanita'marittima/in venezia” handstamp, containing posters related to the disinfection rules to be applied to incoming goods, persons, and letters arriving from the Levant, including Ottoman Albania. These dispositions were prepared by the Health Magistrate of Venice in accordance with the information received from ships landing in the Adriatic ports after they were conquered by French troops, and they were sent to the Health Magistrate in Naples to allow the adoption of similar protective measures at the port of Naples. Taxed on destination with a high fee of 50 grani. The earliest known use of this quarantine handstamp, predating the previously reported usage from 1809 by C. Ravasini.
