Banca Nationala, Romania, hand-executed back essay for 500 Lei, 1934,

Reverse is handstamped with two dates '18th May 1934' & '15th June 1934' suggesting that this was a preliminary design for the back of the August 1934 Issue. The composition retains the colours used in the adopted issue but experiments with a circular frame, differing from the square border of the final design.

A sheet of tracing paper has been attached with tape to the reverse of the board, allowing it to be flipped over the design. It bears the instruction: 'NOTE: KINDLY MAKE ALL ALTERATIONS OR ADDITIONS TO SKETCH ON THIS SHEET ONLY'. This provides an interesting insight into the practical design process and the method by which alterations were communicated.

(Pick 36 for type), uncirculated, mounted on board, paper label affixed on top of board with text 'Designed by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co Ltd', tracing paper overlay has been torn and has large pieces missing, small pen or pencil mark in the empty watermark area (back progressive proof)
