James II (1685-1688), Five-Guineas, 1688 QVARTO, first laureate bust left, rev. crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, eleven strings to harp, raised letters | •+• DECVS • ET • TVTAMEN • | • ANNO • REGNI • QVARTO •+• downwards on edge, 41.43g, 7h (MCE 119; EGC I, 316; Stratos 189; S.3397), assessed by NGC as ‘cleaned’, a seeming absurdity given the unbroken and natural orange colour of this coin which in our view is lightly toned with traces of bagmarks, otherwise handsomely and uniformly struck up, very fine, the reverse pleasingly so
