(x) Edward III (1327-1377), Post-Treaty Period, Noble, 1369-1377, "Group III", Tower (London), EDW | ARD 'x DI : GR'A x REX +AnGL 'x Z x FRAnC 'x DnS x hIB 'x Z x AQ', annulet before EDW, single saltire stops, closed E, lombardic Ns, scroll-tailed R, King standing in ship, brandishing long sword and Royal shield set with semé of four fleurs in first quarter, wearing Royal jupon over brigandine armour, ropes 3/1, quatrefoils 5/4, bow-sprit through foc'sul, interior of castle now cross-hatched, ornaments 1-1-1-1, leopards facing right, rev. + Ih'C : AVTEM : TRANSIEnS : PER : MEDIVM : ILLORVM : IBAT, double saltire stops, floriate cross, crowned leopards in angles, E• at centre, 7.703g [118.88grns], 2h, i.m. cross pattée (Doubleday 284 same obverse die; Schneider I, 114; North 1278; S.1518), with light shipwreck surfaces and reddish iron-stain toning consistent with the Emden trove, otherwise on a fuller flan, a pleasingly bold very fine

"North Coast of Holland (near Emden), Trove", discovered 2002, and dispersed through the market by MPO Auctions (Ijsselstein, near Utrecht), from 30 May 2003, with further parcels subsequently privately through the trade until a second auction on 3 December 2005



"The hoard from which this noble apparently derives, is said to have been discovered in a shipwreck off the north coast of Holland, near Emden, c. 2002. It consisted of more than one thousand gold coins of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, mostly Netherlandish and German gulden, but with more than one hundred English nobles. Several of the coins had iron deposits on their surface, of the kind produced by iron nails in seawater."
