(x) Edward III (1327-1377), Third Coinage, Third Period, Half Noble, authorised 28 July 1346-1351, Tower (London), by Lote Nicholyn and George Clerkyn, ED | WAR 'x D : GRA : REX : AnGL ' Z : FRAnC : DnS : hYB, D formed of composite puncheons, larger lettering, King standing in ship, brandishing long sword and Royal shield set with semé of four-and-a-half fleurs in first quarter, wearing Royal jupon over brigandine armour, rerebrace, couter and gauntlet visible on sword arm, chain mail draping below, ropes 4/2 with dexter line bisecting legend, quatrefoils 3/2, bow-sprit behind foc'sul, ornaments 11-11-1-, leopards facing left, rev. :+: DOMInE : nE : In : FVRORE : TVO : ARGVAS : ME, chevron-barred As, lombardic Ns and Ms, seriffed Roman Is, double saltire stops, small E at centre of early floriate cross with bicornuate filaments and broken anthers and interior "fidget-spinner" trefoils breaking on upper left lobe, with 'later' crowns, 4.126g [63.67grns], 10h, i.m. cross pattée (Chesterton Lane Hoard [10 October 2000], Pl. 4, no. 1 same dies; Montagu 422* ['cracked'] = Potter 1b, Pl. X, no. 16 same obverse die; Doubleday -; Schneider I, 5; Norweb 850 = Schneider I, 6; North 1111; S.1482), faint stubble rash and excavation scuffs to peripheries, with a larger scratch across upper shield (as typical for issue with virtually all known specimens represented from casual discoveries), nevertheless uniform and pleasingly bold for strike, strictly very fine, but extremely rare with only five specimens appearing at global auction this Millennium, with four others in the British Museum, and two secured for the Schneider collection
