(x) William I 'the Conqueror' (1066-1087), 'PAXS' Penny, 1083-1086, Thetford, Godred, + PILLELM REX, MR ligate, crowned bust facing, with flat band and arches, sceptre in right field, rev. + GODRED ON ÐTFRD, short cross potent, P A X S in lobes in angles, 1.37g [21.14grns], 3h (EMC 1200.0650; North 848; BMC VIII [Coll. no. 1011]; S.1257), a touch off-centre with partial peripheral striking softness, otherwise colourfully toned with flashy lustre, a bolder very fine with an imposing portrait, an evidently scarce type for this moneyer
