(x) William I 'the Conqueror' (1066-1087), 'Bonnet' Type, Penny, 1068-1070, Cricklade, Leofræd, + PILLELMV REX, A, crowned bust facing, rev. LEOFRED ON CRIC, commencing at 10 o'clock, voided short cross with double-crescent ends over pellet-tipped quatrefoil, 1.24g [19.14grns], 7h (SCBI 21 [Yorkshire], 1116 same obverse die; Lockett 889 = FEJ 1020 same dies ['cracked']; North 842; BMC II [Coll. no. 83 and Pl. IV, no. 5same obverse die]; S.1251), a few minor marks, otherwise a most remarkably bold specimen with a quite exceptional portrait for issue, almost extremely fine, and an excessively rare type for this mint, unquestionably the finest in private hands being vastly superior to the Elmore-Jones coin
