William I, 'the Conqueror' (1066-1087), 'PAXS' Penny, 1083-1086, Winchester, Æthelstan, + PILLELM REX, crowned bust facing, with flat band and arches, sceptre in right field, rev. + IEST[II]N ON PINCC, NC ligate, short cross potent, P A X S in lobes in angles, 1.40g [21.61grns], 12h (Winchester Mint 2002, dies Ca [4 Recorded]; SCBI XII [Ashmolean], 163 same dies; SCBI XXIV [West Country], 998 same dies [listed as dies Hg in error]; SCBI XXVI [East Anglia], 1401 same dies; SCBI XXXVI [Berlin], 901 same dies; Lockett I, 959 [VII/VIII], same reverse die; Doubleday 865 same reverse die; North 848; BMC VIII, 1072; S.1257), struck soft but delightfully cabinet toned, of excellent fabric, a pleasingly good very fine for issue, and highly prized in the present market place
