(x) A superb and enticing 'fantasy' Grand Cross sash Badge by Kiebel, representing both the Order of the Garter and the Russian Order of St Catherine, to which only three Queens of England belonged

The Most Noble Order of the Garter and the Order of St Catherine sash Badge by Kiebel, St Petersburg, 120mm x 80mm, silver (84 zolotniki), silver-gilt and enamel, very fine

While the reason for the construction of this intriguing object remains unknown, we do know that it was made by the renowned jewellers of Imperial Russia, Kiebel, and that only three women are confirmed to have been invested into both the Order of the Garter and the Order of St Catherine: Queen Victoria, Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary of Teck. The combined hallmark of 84 zolotniki and the city arms denoting St Petersburg suggest that the piece was likely constructed between 1882-99, perhaps as a trial for a proposed Royal gift or for a 'fantasy' Badge for evening wear when the Royal families of both the United Kingdom and Russia met.
