D'Almaine and Co were located at 38 Gerrard Street and were the embroiders of His Majesty William IV. They are recorded for having embroidered several G.C.B breast stars and mantle stars for the Order of the Bath and are believed to have been doing such work between circa 1820 and 1843. Given the provenance of the star, it is likely that this particular breast star was the one used by Jeffrey R. Jacob in his writing of the book Court Jewellers of the World.
Ede and Ravenscroft are the oldest tailors in London, founded in 1689. In the early 1800s, the business that later became known as Ede and Ravenscroft was operating under its previous name Adams and Ede. Joseph Ede, the name likely recorded on the reverse of this breast Star, was appointed robemaker to His Majesty King William IV in 1834 and later Queen Victoria in 1837.
