John Smith had the service number 3042 and died of wounds on 3 November 1857 while his Regiment was engaged in the Defence of Lucknow.

The roll shows another John Smith with the service number 2092 who was entitled to an Indian Mutiny medal with the clasp Lucknow, both men served in Persia prior to the Indian Mutiny.
