In 1851 the 12th Lancers moved to Cape Colony to fight in the Eighth Frontier War. They then served during the Crimean War, reinforcing the Light Brigade in 1855 after its infamous charge at Balaklava the previous year. Two years later they then were posted to India in order to assist the suppression of the Mutiny, remaining there until 1860. Nicholson died on the return from India aboard H.M.S.
