Joseph Goodfellow was born at Leicester on 16 December 1792 and enlisted into the 14th Regiment on 14 May 1811. He was swiftly promoted to Corporal in August 1811 and then to Sergeant in January 1813. At this time, Goodfellow was serving in Bengal, where he stayed for a staggering 28 years, from August 1812 - March 1840. While posted out there he was promoted Colour Sergeant in February 1822 and then Quartermaster Sergeant in August 1824. While out there he met and married Treachy Sinny and they married in Cawnpore in April 1816 and had seven children together. While out in India, Goodfellow served on a number of campaigns, including the Nepal Campaign 1814-15 where very few members of the regiment claimed or received the Nepaul Clasp for the Army of India Medal. In February 1817 he then served at the Fort of Hattrass, the Pindaree and Mahratta War of 1817-18 and the capture of the town and fortress of Bhurtpore in January 1826, commanded by Major General Reynell. The regiment lost 2 officers and 31 men in the battle, with 7 Officers and 99 men wounded. A total of 265 men in the 14th Regiment received the Army of India Medal with clasp.

In March 1840, Goodfellow was then posted to China where he served for the following three years. Serving in the China War between 1840-42 with the 26th Regiment, he saw action at the capture of Chusan in July 1840, the assault on Canton in 1841, and a number of operations in 1942 including actions at Ningpo, Choke, Cheepoo, Woosung and Shanghai, Chin Kiang Foo and operations before Nankin. He departed China in February 1843, deployed back to Bengal for five months in 1843 and later retired on half pay in March 1848.
