George Edmund Bastard was born at Landport, Hampshire on 25 September 1877 and enlisted in the Royal Navy on 17 January 1895 as Boy Class II. Reaching his majority he was appointed Ordinary Seaman on 25 September 1895 whilst still serving ashore.
He saw service with Volage and Alexandra before joining Centurion on 12 February 1897, he was serving with her under then Captain John Jellicoe when the Boxer revolt tore through China. Admiral Seymour commanding the China Station assembled an expedition to march on Pekin and relieve the diplomatic legations there.
Bastard was one of those called upon to join the Naval Brigade, they suffered several reverses with even Captain Jellicoe suffering a wound. Bastard is listed as wounded in action on 21 June 1900 at Pietsang with 'bullet wounds to right arm & right hand'. Notably he went ashore on 2 July 1900 and was invalided from service on 8 February 1901; sold together with copied research including service records and casualty roll.
