Auction: 26001 - Orders, Decorations and Medals
Lot: 2
Alexander Davison's Medal for the Nile 1798, gilt-bronze, (Joseph Dunt H.M.S. Defence), fitted with a contemporary swivel suspension loop for wear, housed in a frame for display, some light wear to highpoints but with most gilt remaining, generally very fine
Joseph Dunt does not appear to have lived to claim a Naval General Service Medal.
Defence was a 74-gun Bellona-class third-rate ship of the line: launched on 31 March 1763 she saw significant service throughout her working life, including during the American War of Independence, at the Glorious First of June 1794, the Battle of the Nile (with Captain John Peyton in command), the Battle of Copenhagen and at the Battle of Trafalgar. Her impressive career came to a sad end then she ran aground on 24 December 1811 off the west coast of Jutland, Denmark, resulting in the loss of 583 crew including her Captain: there were only 14 survivors.
