Lot: 1
General Picton's Medal for the Defence of Gibraltar 1782, 59mm, silver-gilt, unnamed as issued, contained within a leather and velvet case of contemporary manufacture, a few very minor scratches to obverse field and one small edge knock, traces of original gilding throughout and an extremely attractive example, good very fine
It is recorded in the Regimental History of the 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment of Foot that these handsome Medals were struck to the order of General Picton, who was Colonel of that Regiment, for presentation to the officers who served with him at Gibraltar. Several examples have been noted to the 12th Foot - including one to Captain John Spilsbury - which was sold in the Matthew Taylor Collection in 1983, and another in possession of the Suffolk Regiment itself.
