George Benjamin Hodson was born on 3 October 1863 at Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, the son of Benjamin Hodson and Jane Hodson.

A Gentleman Cadet he enrolled at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst being commissioned into the South Staffordshire Regiment as a Lieutenant on 10 May 1882, subsequently transferring to the Oxfordshire Light Infantry on 20 February 1884 and later the Indian Army on 1 September 1884, joining 57th Wilde's Rifles.

Promoted to Captain on 10 May 1893, he was elevated to Major on 10 July 1901, Lieutenant Colonel on 13 November 1905 and Colonel on 1 January 1911. He served in the Afghan war in 1880, with the 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment in the Egyptian war of 1882 and was present in the reconnaissance in force from Alexandria on 5 Aug 1882.

He served with the Burmese Expedition in 1885-87 for which he was mentioned in despatches, and later with the Hazara Expedition in 1891. He served in 1897-98 on the North-West Frontier of India in operations in Bajaur and the Mamund country, and Buner and twice mentioned in Despatches.

In 1901-1902 he served in Northern Nigeria in the Aro Expedition and was again mentioned in despatches and made a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order for services during the Aro Expedition in Southern Nigeria. In 1911 he was created a Commander of the Bath.

He was stationed for some time with his regiment, 57th Wilde's Rifles, at Ferozepore in the Punjab. In the Great War he commanded the 33rd Infantry Brigade, Indian Army and deployed with them to the Dardanelles in April 1915. Wounded in action at Suvla during the Gallipoli campaign he was evacuated to Malta where he died of his wounds on 25 January 1916 and is buried in Pieta Military Cemetery, Pieta, Northern Harbour, Malta; sold together with copied research including a photographic image of the recipient.
