George William Scales was born in 1894 and was living at 78 Hall Road, Norwich, when he entered the service there on 27 February 1912 at the age of 24. He was posted to the 1st East Anglian Brigade, Royal Field Artillery and was appointed Acting Bomber from Driver on 5 August 1914. Scales was disembarked with his unit at France in November 1915, where he served on the Western Front before being stationed with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 3 February 1916, with whom he served until returning home at the end of the war.
Scales was discharged upon his demobilisation on 5 June 1919, after which he returned to his home at Norwich. He received his Territorial Efficiency Medal in 1922 and was further entitled to a 1914-15 Star trio; sold together with copied research.
