Dominique Vincent/Charles Marechal: Exceptionelle Réunion d'Ordres de Chevalerie, Armen et Uniforms, Nouveau Drouot Salle No. 6, 22 April 1983, Lot 56, Paris. At that time sold alongside his diamond leg Garter and Lesser George.

King Leopold II of Belgium was born on 9 April 1835 and became King on 17 December 1865. Made a Garter Stranger Knight in 1866 by his first cousin Queen Victoria, he commissioned the manufacture of this item of Insignia for wear and was known to be fond of having various examples to suit his fancy. It is interesting to note that Queen Victoria travelled for his inauguration in February 1866, together with another of his first cousins, King Fernando II of Portugal.
