D.F.M. London Gazette 21 September 1945.
This N.C.O. joined No.103 Squadron on 27th September, 1944, and during the last five months has completed 36 sorties involving a total of 231.10 hours flying on Lancaster aircraft. Flight Sergeant Johnstone has not only displayed a fine sense of duty at all times but has shown a cheerful eagerness to fly on operations on every available opportunity. He has carried out his duties as a Navigator with a quiet confidence that has been a fine example as well as showing an extremely high standard of operational navigation during operations that varied from many large-scale attacks against German industrial areas to the more specialised targets in support of the Allied Expeditionary Force, the Uft dam and extensive mine-laying. Flight Sergeant Johnstone's fine record is an example to all Navigators and has contributed largely to the successful completion of his crew's tour.
Remarks by Station Commander:
Flight Sergeant Johnstone's splendid work has been a most valuable factor in a successful tour of operations completed by a very fine crew. In addition to his undoubted technical ability, his unvarying cheerfulness and quiet confidence has been an inspiration to his crew. Strongly recommended for the Distinguished Flying Medal.
He was further mentioned in the Birmingham Mail on 21 September 1945, where it noted he was born in Soho, Birmingham and who was a clerk in civil life.
