Gorden Alex Nitschke was born at Adelaide, South Australia on 24 September 1933 and enlisted with the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Infantry Corps. Later serving with the 9th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment in Vietnam he was later posted to the Australian Army Catering Corps.
