Frank Richards Doel was born at Corsley, Wiltshire on 15 January 1877. He had originally served with the 3rd Battalion, South Wales Borderers (Militia) before enlisting full time into the 4th Battalion on 22 May 1891. He served in Egypt between 17 December 1892 - 15 April 1895 and then served in Gibraltar between 16 April 1895 - 17 January 1898. During this time on 22 August, he was placed in confinement as a result of being drunk and striking a superior officer, he was tried by D.C.M. and was given 84 days and a £1 fine. Doel then served back at Home between 18 January 1898 - 12 January 1900 and during this time was placed on the Reserve but was recalled to the Colours on 18 December 1899. Doel served in South Africa between 13 January 1900 - 29 August 1902 before finally returning Home again on 30 August 1902. Doel was married on 15 November 1902 to Elizabeth Edith Yerbury at Montpelier, Bristol and was finally discharged from the army on 21 May 1903.

He served as an A.R.P. Warden during the Second World War and is likely to be further entitled to a Defence Medal 1939-45.
