David King was born at Crowell, Thame, Oxfordshire in 1859 and attested with the 42 Brigade at Oxford on 25 May 1877. Posted to the 85th Foot he served with them in Afghanistan from 1879 where the Regiment took part in the expedition against the Zaimukhts, destroying their capital of Zawa. Leaving Afghanistan in 1881 the Regiment was posted to Natal where they were stationed from March-December until being amalgamated with the 53rd Foot to form the Shropshire Light Infantry.
Their first campaign was to be the during the Anglo-Egyptian War where they formed part of the British formation guarding Alexandria while the rest of the army fought at Tel-El-Kebir. King was part of the army of occupation after the war and joined the Army Reserve on 10 August 1882. In this capacity he continued to serve until 24 May 1889 when he was finally discharged; sold together with copied research.
