Joseph Dunning was born at Middlewich, Cheshire and attested into the 18th Brigade at Fleetwood on 6 March 1877 but quickly joined the 1/22 Regiment. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 18 July 1878 and transferred to 2/21st Regiment on 1 January 1879 and served in South Africa between 22 February 1879 - 4 January 1882, however during this time he was to lose his 'stripe' reverting to Private on 1 May 1879, he never sought promotion in his career again.

Dunning was sent to the East Indies on 5 January 1882 where he remained until 7 December 1887 before returning Home. Dunning was to complete his service on 2 March 1889. He returned to live in Cheshire and resided at Cholmondeston and died in 1934.
