Great Plague Letter
1665 (7 July) entire letter from George Chudleigh and Baldwin Ackland in Exon, with address panel reading "To the most Honored Sr. Thomas Clifford Knight, those present in London or Aboard the Swiftsure in the Kings Ma'ties royall Navy", endorsed here "With speede" and "post pd to London". Letter concerns the ongoing Naval war with the Dutch, wishing the recipient "that you may bee victorious & once more beate the Dutch soundly as soone as may bee". No postal markings are to be found; one might expect a Bishop Mark, though owing to the plague there were huge postal staff shortages. Fine and scarce.
