First Day of Penny Postage

1840 (10 Jan.) entire letter from the Assistant Adjutant General's office headed "Royal Marine Office", addressed to "Colonl Jones, Commander, Royal Marins, Portsmouth", the face stuck with crown circle "paid/10 ja 10/1840" in red. Interesting contents refer to a communication from the Lords of Her Majesty's Treasury containing the necessary instruction on occasion of the abolition of official Franking - and to command that for the present regulations shall be strictly adhered to with respect to the correspondence of the several Divisions of Marines", namely, postage is to be prepaid and signed by the Office Adjutant, letters are to be addressed directly as opposed to Admiralty Secretaries, and that letters should be kept light and envelopes dispensed with as much as possible. Some splitting along fold though all intact and legible; a most interesting and important first day of Penny Post usage.
