Reports
1861 report from the Governor of Shansi, Zeng Guofan, to the Cabinet, the report is regarding the passing away of the head Lama of the Mission, who was dispatched by the Regent of Tibet, and died on the way back after paying tribute to the Emperor. However, the Emperor also passed away and the seals on the front and back are applied in blue ink to signify mourning. This document consists of a ten-folded pages (22.3 x 110 mm). The historical background is the Second Opium War with the Franco-British occupation of Beijing. The Xianfeng Emperor retreated to the Old Summer Palace where he died. There is some damage to the front of the first page but this barley detracts from this important historical document. Photo
