Thirteenth Dalai Lama
1900-20 letter to the King of Nepal (50x59 cm) with the endless knot personal seal of the Dalai Lama (Dawson 5) covered with a paper fragment; fine. This seal was used on letters to official friends and is scarce. Photo

The thirteenth Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso was enthroned in 1879 but did not assume power until 1895. He was exiled between 1904-09 in Mongolia (to avoid the British) and between 1910-13 in Sikkim and Darjeeling (to avoid the Chinese). He is referred to as the 'Great Thirteenth' as he was responsible for declaring Tibet's national independence from China with the fall of the Qing dynasty. See lot 55
