Dalai Lama Mail
Twelfth Dalai Lama
1865 (Oct.) shirt letter, wrapper sealed at the end with his official seal (39 x 39mm) in red showing four lines of Horyig script, and on the exterior with his small, personal seal with dot and crescent (very rare).

The letter reads, "We have received letter from P.M. Jang Bahadur Rana [prime minister of Nepal] addressed to the Dalai Lama and four kazi's - in which he mentioned that Nepal and Tibet should have Everlasting Friendship. He has also expressed his views on the matter which we appreciate very much. Amban Chintarin is reaching Lhasa very soon to discuss these matters. After his arrival - we shall discuss with him and shall send you an accurate reply. You can see other details in the four kazi's reply."

Note that in June 1865 Jang Bahadur Rana attempted a survey on the lower part between the two mountains and the passes between Nepal and Tibet. He was seeking some boundary adjustments. This reply appears to be on the survey matter and signifies the Amban position. It is rare to find the Dalai Lama writing on political matters. Photo

The twelfth Dalai Lama, Trinley Gyatso, was enthroned on July 3 1860; he died at the age of twenty in 1873
