This penny is a representative of the approximately £400.0.0 coined by the first incarnation of the Cork Mint between February 1295 and February 1297; Cassidy, The Irish Exchanges and Mints in the Reign of Edward I, BNJ 2017). The mint owed its existence to the unexpected elevation of Thomas Fitzgerald, Second Baron Desmond, to justiciary (political chief executive by local election, rather than royal appointment) of Ireland for 168 days in 1295, following the sudden death of Edward's appointed incumbent while Fitzgerald was in Dublin.
