Hiberno-Norse, Sitric II "Silkbeard" Olafsson (c. 995-1036), Phase II, Late Issue, Penny, c. 1020-1035, 'Dunbrody Abbey' Type, Dublin, in the style of an Æthelred II Long Cross Penny, + INH-IN:NPIND, blundered legends, draped bust left, two pellets before mouth, cross pattée behind neck, rev. + INI [spiral]NI IIININ P8IN, largely symbolic legend with retrograde and reversed lettering, voided long cross, triquetra in third quarter, single pellet in others, 0.69g, 9h (Dolley A3/f; SCBI 8 [British Museum] 102, same reverse die; Roth 72 same dies; Spink Auction, 22 February 2006, lot 10; S.6127), some residual spots of verdigris to reverse and ghosting to portrait, otherwise lustrous and pleasingly cabinet toned, a really good very fine, of good metal and most pleasing in hand, a very rare variety
