Lot: 192

1864 "Hidalgos"
Saltillo 1p. Black, unused with original gum, centered toward the lower left, with perforations just touching the design at left. Slight toning along the left margin. An exceptionally rare stamp, displaying crisp detail and strong visual appeal, with only at most five examples recorded. This issue was the first to be perforated, printed in the United States by order of Benito Juárez. It saw brief use in July and August in Saltillo and Monterrey, during the period when Juárez moved his government to those cities. Most of the print run was delivered after Juárez regained control of the country but was never issued for postal use, instead entering the philatelic market and making non-overprinted examples common and inexpensive. However, stamps bearing district overprints, whether used or unused, are very scarce, with this denomination being the rarest in the set. Still accompanied by Fayol’s original inventory card #973. 1982 MEPSI certificate. Scott 17, $3,250.
