The Cut-Square 4c. Black on Lemon-Yellow - One of the Rarest Used Stamps of British Guiana
4c. black on lemon-yellow, Townsend Type A (Robson Lowe Type B) apparently without postmaster or postal clerks initials, a cut-square example clearly cancelled with double-arc datestamp for Nov. 01 1851. Lower left corner added, with some thinning and other minor faults, though these hardly detract from this great rarity, of which fewer than five examples are recorded. This example boasts the highest possible pedigree and is being offered to the public for the first time since the auction sale of the The Royal Philatelic collection (May 2001). Pemberton, Wilson & Co. handstamp on reverse. R.P.S. Certificate (2001). S.G. 3I £130,000 (cut square). Photo

Note:
Townsend and Howe note that of the eighteen examples of this stamp recorded by Harold Rowntree Holmes, only two examples are cut square, all the others being cut round. Holmes records dates of use for this stamp as between September and December 1851.
