Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector, AR Medal, "1653", Dutch striking after T. Simon, c. 1730, OLIV · D · G · R · P · ANG · SCO · ET · HIB · PRO, armoured and draped bust facing slightly right, rev. PAX · QVÆRITVR · BELLO ·, garnished coat-of-arms held by lion in background, 17.62g, 34mm (Eimer 189; MI i 410/46; Lessen (1979), 114-26), legends weakly struck to reverse, toned, very fine and a pleasingly three-dimensional medal

Provenance

Andrew Howitt [History in Coins], by private treaty, May 2010

(BNJ, 1979, pp. 95 refers): 'From microscopic examination, measurements, and photographic overlays, though on a somewhat crude scale, there can be no question the obverse die was sunk using Simon's bust puncheon, a situation that presents problems. There are added rivets on the armour and some fringe modifications. This medal does not necessarily owe its prototype to Simon's Lord General for the puncheon could have been available independently of the die and prior to its discovery, and of course the legends and reverse are unrelated to the Lord General medal. The reverse is a reasonably good imitation of the Lord Protector reverse.'
