Provenance

The "Carrington" Collection of Exceptional English and Anglo-Gallic Gold Coins

Evelyn Rashleigh, Sotheby's, 21 June 1909, lot 652* - "very fine and exceedingly rare" - £10.0.0

James Dodsley Cuff, Sotheby's, 8 June 1854, lot 828 - "34.5grns, extra rare" - £10.0.0 [Danziger]

Prior to the last specimen surfacing in these rooms on 1 October 2009 (lot 35 - 2.18g), the Norweb collection was the last such offering of this excessive rarity for collectors. Interestingly, our cataloguer appended the following footnote at the time:

"In his article on the early and pre-Treaty gold coinages of Edward III, Potter lists four (recte three), specimens of this coin, namely those in the British Museum (Grueber 262, 2.16gm.), the present specimen, and that in the Ryan sale, lot 3, where the weight was given as 34 gr. (2.20gm); this latter is now in a private collection in Europe. The source for Potter's fourth specimen is given as the illustration in Brooke's English Coins, but this is also of the Grueber example.

A coin not alluded to by Potter, but certainly from different dies to those noted above, was in the E W Rashleigh sale, lot 652 (ex J D Cuff, lot 828). This curious hybrid, with a quoted weight of 34.3 gr. (2.23 gm), has chevron-barred A's on both sides and a double tressure on the reverse, features typical of the reduced-weight coins issued according to the indenture of July 1346."
