Yemen, Arab Republic (1962-90), Order of 26 September, Military Division, 2nd Class neck Badge, by Skinner & Co., Bond Street, London, 70mm, silver-gilt (hallmarks for Birmingham 1983) and enamel, good very fine, in fitted case of issue with corresponding miniature award, riband bar and boutonnière

Following the 26 September 1962 Revolution, which overthrew the Imamate, Egyptian military forces were actively involved in supporting the fledgling Yemen Arab Republic (YAR). During the early part of the Civil War Maison Tewfik Bichay in Cairo was instructed by the office of the Egyptian President Nasser to produce orders for the YAR. These awards were the Orders of Saba' and of Ma'arib. Following the 1967 overthrow of YAR President Sallal in a bloodless coup and the withdrawal of Egyptian forces, these awards fell into disuse and were superseded under the authority of Resolutions No. 1 of 1973, No. 17 of 1979, No. 76 of 1981 by a new series of orders. In 1990 the YAR merged with the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY), to become the Republic of Yemen - further to the merger the YAR awards became obsolete.

This three class order, in civil and military divisions, instituted by Republican Resolution No. 76, of 12 February 1981, was named to commemorate the day on which the Imamate was overthrown in 1962, and is awarded to those who participate in the service of the nation. The badge is an eight-pointed star with a red enamelled rim and ball finials. In the centre are the arms of the YAR superimposed on a green enamel circle with a red enamel border. The arms are above two crossed rifles. These rifles are absent on the civil version of the award. The badge is superimposed upon a further eight-pointed star.
