Vatican, Holy See, Order of Christ, a superb and rare Collar Badge, circa 1830-40, by Tanfani, Rome, 145mm including crown and trophy of arms suspension x 40mm, gold and enamel, with a diamond insert in the trophy of arms breastplate, maker's cartouche on reverse, this with superb floral engraving to reverse, test mark to base, extremely fine and a rare specimen of the goldsmith's art exhibiting superb workmanship, with the trophy unusually rich in arms

A single Class Order, awards are reserved almost exclusively for Roman Catholic Sovereigns and Heads of State, and the Insignia comprises a Badge worn from a Collar, and a Breast Star. Awarded since the era of Pope John XXII, as part of the general re-organisation of papal honours in 1905 by Pope Pius X, the Order was made the most senior papal honour. No appointments have been made since 1987 and following the death in 1993 of the last remaining knight, King Baudouin of Belgium, the Order became dormant.
